Frequently Asked Questions
What is Henna/Jagua?
Henna is a natural dye made from the leaves of the henna plant, traditionally used for body art and hair coloring. It dyes the skin and hair a deep reddish brown.
Jagua (pronounced ha-gua) is a gel-like substance made from the seed of the South American fruit (genipa americana). It dyes the skin blue-black, just like a real tattoo – perfect for test-driving that tattoo idea!
We also offer a Henna-Jagua Mix that shows up a deep purple shade. It adds a lot of depth to mix and match!
Eco-friendly and chemical-free, henna & jagua offer a safe and vibrant alternative to synthetic dyes. Once it has faded, it naturally breaks down, allowing you to enjoy beautiful designs guilt-free!
How is Henna/Jagua Applied?
The leaves are picked, dried, and turned into a fine powder. We mix the powder with water, essential oils, and sugar to create a smooth paste, which is then rolled into cones used for application.
At your appointment, we customize a design of your choice and apply it freehand to the skin! It will look like a paste on the skin until you remove the paste, revealing a colorful stain beneath.
How Long Does it Last?
Both henna and jagua last 7-14 days depending on placement and aftercare. Once the wrap is removed, the stain will appear light, but it deepens over 48 hours, staining the upper layers of your skin. The design fades naturally as your skin sheds.
The color is richer and lasts longer on areas with thicker skin, like the hands, feet, and legs. It may be lighter and fade faster on areas with thinner skin, like the shoulders or belly.
How do I care for my henna/jagua?
Henna is applied as a paste, and we wrap it in breathable gauze to protect the design. Keep water away for 6-12 hours (for henna) or 2-4 hours (for jagua).
How do I prepare for my appointment?
To prepare for your henna or jagua appointment, exfoliate the area gently and skip lotions or oils on the day for the best stain results. Wear loose clothing for comfort and easy access to the design area, and plan to keep the paste undisturbed for several hours (4-8 for henna, 2-4 for jagua). Expect deeper stains on hands and feet, and bring any design ideas or questions you have!
